@ 1:53pm - work
|
I don't like my job. Plain and simple. My job on paper is just a cover. My actual job is to navigate the political landmines, leaving a path for others to follow. A secondary task is to mentor some of the other team members.
Today, while playing host to the VP and the Director of Business development for the Indian subcontractor we're working with, it occurs to me that I fundamentally don't even like the people I work with either. I can tolerate them, and they're decent engineers, but as people, I don't like them.
This is going to be an exercise in patience for me. I'm glad I know it's a short term project.

@ 10:28am - date and a movie
|
|
I had a date with my husband on Saturday. For the first time, we went to dinner and a movie -- alone! We've done movies at home just the 2 of us, and we've done movies at the theater with Donavin, but this was the first time we got to see a 'grown up movie' in the theater.
We saw The Dark Knight. I would highly recommend it. It was a really good movie.
Jason and I had a discussion after the movie about the wide variations in PG-13 movies. We were kinda surprised that this one wasn't R. What are your thoughts?

@ 11:23am - bulleted update
|
I've been a bad blogger lately... I read everyone else's daily -- I swear! But I've been aweful at updating my own.
Unfortunately, I don't have much time (which is the story of my life these days), but here's what's been going on -- in bulleted form for my own convenience... :-P
- Donavin broke his arm the day before we returned from our honeymoon. He broke both bones in his right arm just above his wrist. He was in a long cast for two weeks - the kind that goes above your elbow. It was shifting more than the doctor thought was good. So, he had 2 pins put in on July 1st. He goes back to the orthopedist this Thursday to hopefullly get the pins removed and get into a shorter cast.
He's not been happy about not being able to swim this summer.... - Donavin was at church summer camp last week. He's glad he's home -- this year wasn't as pleasant as years past. The new camp director isn't as easy going as the last.
- Work has been crazy. I'm doing hardware stuff these days... it's strange. I'm working crazy hours.
- We're making good progress on getting the house in order. The wedding stuff has mostly all found various homes around the house. It's the stuff Jason moved from his condo that is just laying around.
- Jason got an early bonus payout so that we can fix the damage from the flooding we had in the basement... now it's just finding the time to get it done...
I guess that's all for now...

@ 3:47pm - sad
|
My grandma passed away this morning. The aneurysm that she's had for several years ruptured.
I don't know what else to say other than she was very important to my life. She was the only grandmother I had. As some of you might remember, my grandpa passed away 4 years ago. They were really the only connection I had to my dad's side of the family after my parents divorced.
At the moment, I feel kind of lost.

We're home safe from our honeymoon, and our house isn't underwater.
Also, I sent out an email with a link to the photographer's pictures. If you're reading this, and you didn't get an email from me, it's because I either inadvertently missed you, or I don't have an email address for you. So... if you want to see them, but shoot me an email to my new gmail address -- tori dot wenger.

|
I'm supposed to be packing up the last remaining things in my apartment and cleaning it. But I'm not. I'm sitting here on the floor, putzing around on the computer, and listening to my itunes. There really isn't much stuff left here -- Jason took almost all of it back to CR this weekend.
Can I just throw it all away? It's just stuff.... in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't matter much.

@ 3:34pm - conversation with Donavin
|
Donavin: Mommy, why are we allies with Germany when we've fought them in every world war?
Me: Because people change.
I know that there's a long list of things I could have said, but that was my immediate reaction. Regardless, I love the way his mind thinks.
What would you have said?

@ 9:11am - course evals
|
My wonderful husband-to-be often reminds me that introspection can be a very bad thing. I'm reminded of this when I sit here in Java Haute wondering if I made any difference at all this year. I had hopes of coming in and bringing some "real-world" perspective to software engineering. I knew that I was green, but I felt like I was passionate about the material, the school, my job... I wanted to make a difference, leave an impression -- all for the good, of course. I'm looking back at my interactions with the students, their grades, my lectures, and of course, end of quarter course evaluations.
I got those today. I had abysmally low turn out -- 16 of 22 for CSSE 376 (Quality Assurance), 3 of 10 for on section of senior project, and 4 of 10 for the other.
I hope to post later a longer reflection of what my evals say, but here are some "jewels" that stuck out in my mind.

@ 8:44am - honesty (education?) in today's society
|
Twice in the past week, I've been through the drive through someplace where they gave me the incorrect change. I've given them the coinage and a larger bill, and in return they give me more paper back than what is correct. Both times, I of course, gave back the extra. However, I'm surprised by the looks that I get from the cashier. It's like I can see the gears turning for them to figure out who's right -- eventually, they have an "ah-hah" moment. Now, there are two theories at work here -- 1. Are people just that dishonest that their surprise is in me doing the right thing? or 2. Are we failing to teach our children such basic math that they can't make change?
Regardless, I'm perplexed by this.
Oh... and as a side note, when it happened this morning, I drove away without looking in my bag (bad, bad, bad), and I didn't even get my hashbrown. :-( Maybe she knew I wouldn't get it, and that was what my extra $1 was for.... *shrug*

@ 6:00pm - Good food at Wendy's
|
So, I know this is probably going to sound odd, but this is a post dedicated to the awesome-ness of my dinner from Wendy's tonight.
Tonight, I had a Southwest Chicken Caesar Salad (here). It has dark green lettuce -- yeah, that's right, I said dark green. Not that iceberg crap that most fast food places try to serve. I'm talking about romaine here people. The chicken that comes with it is seasoned and cut into bite-size pieces. Now, I know that seems trivial, but it's really nice not to have to cut up chicken strips with the plastic cutlery. It also has black beans, corn, tomatoes, and shredded parmesan cheese. It's seriously good stuff.
Now, I know that I can buy all of this stuff for cheaper than I paid for it at Wendy's, but that's not really the point.
You should go try one next time you need a quick meal... tasty stuff.

@ 4:31pm - wedding stuff....
|
So, I'm at 30 days (and counting).
A lot of the really big stuff is done. There are some minor things to do, but most of them require me and Jason to have time to actually talk to each other, and that's not been happening lately.
Lately, I come home from work (~6 pm), eat quickly, then work until ~10-11 pm. And he's doing some contracting work and doing pretty much the same.
Anyway... today, I'm mostly caught up, and I'm restless... I feel like I should be doing something for the wedding, but I can't come up with what exactly. bah....
